Bob Fowke, author of the guides on France, Spain, Greece and Turkey
has written more than a hundred books on various topics for several
of the major UK publishers, including many history and reference books.
'Writing these short histories has been an extraordinary experience,'
says Bob. 'To take such vast subjects and distil them down to their
essence is incredibly demanding but very rewarding. The trick is
to keep the writing readable. Long lists of names and dates are
no use to anyone. Of course it's useful to have the cartoons and
the maps to liven things up. I've tried to write these books so
that they're suitable for adults but also for teenagers. In other
words, I've tried to keep a sense of fun - where that's appropriate.'
Asked if he has any advice for travelers Bob said: 'But more than
one copy for each country you're visiting. That way you'll get to
finish it - even if someone buries their nose in the other one.'
